Keemlaw build bespoke kitchen after blaze
A HISTORIC pub forced to close after fire broke out in the kitchen has reopened just nine weeks later.
The blaze broke out under the floorboards in the 17th century Oak on the Green pub in Bearsted at the end of March, and at the time managers said they hoped to reopen in June.
But they were able to unlock the doors ahead of schedule on Thursday, May 28, celebrating with a packed house.
Almost 30 firefighters tackled the fire, which had been smouldering through the floorboards overnight following an electrical fault, before being discovered by a member of staff as they arrived for work at 8am on Tuesday, March 27.
The kitchen is believed to have once been the holding jail for the local courtroom.
The pub itself can trace its history back to 1665.
